MARQUETTE —
Waino Maki, 86, of Lake Annie Road, died Tuesday morning, February 25, 2003, at Marquette General Hospital.
He was born at his Lake Annie home on February 11, 1917 to Werner and Jennie (Kallio) Maki and attended Quincy Schools. Being a lifelong resident on the Lake Annie Road, he was a farmer for much of his working life, but he worked for Quincy Mining Company for several years.
In 1939, he was married to Norine Eriksson. The couple was married for 61 years before she died on February 10, 1999.
Waino is survived by his son, John (Evelyn) Maki of Keweenaw Bay; his daughter, Mary (Kevin) Smith of Hancock; grandchildren, Gayle (Gary) Marochek, Kristine (Keith) Moore, Karen (Randy) Karttonen, Todd Maki, Daniel Maki, Jennie Maki, Aaron Witting, Lindsay Smith and Cole Smith; great-grandchildren, Renae and Andrew Karttonen, Daniel Maki and Jeremy Marochek; sisters, Vieno Stalo, Irene (Paul) Hauswirth, Esther Kemppainen and Martha Pekkala, all of Hancock; sister-in-law, Betty Pykkonen of Roseville, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and wife, the was also preceded in death by a grandson, John; and a brother, John.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Church of the Resurrection in Hancock. Spring burial will be at the Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the O'Neill-Dennis Funeral Home in Hancock.
He was loved dearly by his family and will be greatly missed.
