Murray Innes, 91, a pioneer
in the development of gold
and quicksilver mines died
Monday at his home, 3056
Second Ave.
Private services will
be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at
Benbough Mortuary. Cre-
mation is planned.
Inned was born in Gales-
burg, Ill., and was graduated
from Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute, Troy, N.Y., in 1890
as a mining engineer. Innes
was a mining consultant in
San Francisco and was an
engineer and executive for
gold, quicksilver and silver
mines in California, Mexico
and South America.
In World War I, he sold
his Oceanic Quicksilver Mine
in San Simeon to Harry Payne
Whitney. He was instrumen-
tal in exploration and gold
dredging in the Yuba Consoli-
dated gold fields of northern
California.
Innes disccovered the Ray
Copper Mine near Globe,
Ariz., which was the founda-
tion for larger copper mining
opeations in that area. He
operated gold and silver
mines in Sonora, Mexico and
was vice president of the Ari-
zona Southeastern Railway
Co.

MINE CONSULTANT
During World War II, Innes
was a United States govern-
ment consultant for South
American mining operations
and in 1945 he went to Ecua-
dor to examine land for gold
dredging. He also served the
government by making quick-
silver tariff studies in Spain.
Former President Hoover,
a civilian mining engineer,
once requested Innes' com-
ment on articles he had writ-
ten, Mrs. Innes said. They
went fishing together on the
MacKenziee River after Hoo-
ver's presidency, she said.
Innes moved to San Diego
in 1929 and held an interest
in the Calahan, Siskiyou Coun-
ty, fold mones until 1941.

FRATERNITY MEMBER
He was a life member of
Theta Xi engineering fraterni-
ty and an honorary member
of the American Institute of
Mining. Metallurgical and
Petroleum Engineers for 50
years.
Innes was a member of
San Diego Fine Arts Gallery,
Cuyamaca and San Diego
Athletic clubs, Manhattan
Club in New York, Family
Club in San Francisco and
Jonathan Club in Los Angeles.
He is survived by his wid-
ow, Dorothy; two sons, Mur-
ray Jr. of San Francisco and
Dr. William B. of Stamford,
Conn.; daughter, Mrs. Le-
titia Sommers of Wisconsin;
a stepdaughter, Mrs. Jo Bob-
ble MacConnell of La Jolla;
seven grandsons, and two
granddaughters.
