Arthur Meyerhoff dies; advertising pioneer, philanthropist

Arthur Edward Meyerhoff, a renowned pioneer in advertising methods
and a philanthropist, died Friday at his home in Rancho Santa Fe. He
was 91.

Mr. Meyerhoff's life was full of diverse interests and posts. He was
a director of the Chicago Cubs baseball team, a member of gardening
societies, an American Saddlebred horse enthusiast, a soldier, an
entrepreneur and an author.

His work in advertising and marketing began in 1929, when he formed
his own advertising agency in his hometown of Chicago. The agency,
Arthur Meyerhoff Associates Inc., ultimately became Batten, Barton,
Durstine and Osborn, one of the largest and most well-known
advertising firms in the world.

He also led the way for marketing through consumer surveys that
revealed the views and preferences of the public.

Mr. Meyerhoff founded numerous companies, including Myzon Inc., which
was established in 1951 and produced and marketed the first
antibiotic feed supplements for livestock and poultry.

He also founded Gibraltar Industries, which introduced PAM, the spray
that prevents foods from sticking to cooking utensils.

During World War I, he served in France with the American
Expeditionary Force. In World War II, he worked with military and
government officials in developing radio programs to help the war
effort.

He was supportive of military force, but advocated using the power of
the advertising media to wage a "war of words" to sell America and
democratic ideals, using what he called "the power of the most
successful advertising media in the world."

His philosophy came forth in his book, "The Strategy of Persuasion,"
which was published in 1965.

In 1967, Mr. Meyerhoff was awarded the George Washington Honor Medal
by Freedoms Foundation.

For more than 30 years, Mr. Meyerhoff was a director of the Santa
Catalina Island Co. and the Chicago Cubs. He was a former
commissioner of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League.
He also was a board member of the Chicago Juvenile Protective
Association.

Mr. Meyerhoff left the Midwest and settled in Rancho Santa Fe in
1964. He was a founding director and honorary life member of the
National Show Horse Registry. He had been an American Saddlebred
enthusiast for more than 30 years and was owner of J.M. Training
Stables at Ranchita Alegre in Rancho Santa Fe.

He was a member of Village Presbyterian Church, the Rancho Santa Fe
Garden Club and the Fairbanks Country Club.

His philanthropies included programs for prevention of child abuse,
riding programs for the handicapped, animal shelters, veterinary
medicine and wildlife preservation.

Mr. Meyerhoff also supported UC San Diego Medical Center, Scripps
Memorial hospitals in La Jolla and Encinitas, the Salk Institute and
the University of California at Davis.

He supported area cultural endeavors as well. In 1967, he was named
chairman of the Build San Diego Opera Fund.

Memorial services will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Village Presbyterian
Church. Inurnment will be at El Camino Memorial Park.

Arrangements for memorial services at Fourth Presbyterian Church in
Chicago were pending.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Memorial
Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, N.Y. 10021.

In addition to his wife of 42 years, Elaine Clemens Meyerhoff, Mr.
Meyerhoff is survived by five children: Arthur E. Meyerhoff Jr. and
Judith Yale of Chicago; Jane Bussier of Paris; Joanne Meyerhoff of
Olivenhain; and Dr. William L. Meyerhoff of Irving, Texas. He also
is survived by nine grandchildren and a brother and sister, Irving
Meyerhoff of Highland Park, Ill., and Edna Winston of Houston.
