Final Rites Are Fixed
After Murder-Suicide

Funeral services for Clifford Oren Swope, 56, and his wife, Lulu, 55, whose bodies were found yesterday morning at their home W1017 Seventeenth, will be held at 1 pm Thursday at Smith's.
The Rev. K R Berthlom and the Rev Wesley Jeffrey will officiate. Burial will be at Greenwood.

The deaths of the retired Air Force man and his wife have been termed murder and suicide, Dr. D Curran Higgins, deputy county coroner said.

Swope apparently shot and killed his wife and then turned the gun on himself, police said. They said the deaths apparently occurred Sunday morning.

Nervous Disorder Noted

Detectives Harry Cockburn and Frank Vecchio said that Swope apparently had been suffering from a general nervous disorder, and had been extremely depressed. He had been undergoing psychiatric treatment, they said.

They said Mrs. Swope had indicated no fear for her own safety, but expressed the fear "that he might do something to himself."
The Swopes's small dog was found in the house, and neighbors took it in.

Mrs. Swope was acting director of the school of nursing and nursing services at Deaconess Hospital and formerly was administrator of Tri-State Memorial Hospital in Clarkston.

The couple is survived by a son, James, who is in military service.

Mrs. Swope also is survived by her parents, Mr and Mrs E S Young of Santa Monica, Calif.; six sisters, Mrs. Lester Parson, Asotin, Wash.; Mrs. Fred Johnson, Grangeville, Idaho; Mrs. Jack Lund, Mrs Howard Read and Mrs. Lloyd Mapel, all of Salem, Ore,; and Mrs. Clyde Rucker, Arlington, Wash.; and a brother, Lyle Young, Seaside, Ore.

She was a member of Queen Avenue Free Methodist Church and the State Board of Nursing.
