DEATH OF MR. JOHNSON C. KIDD

One of the Early Residents of Lis-
towel Passes Away in his
Eighty-Second Year.

Mr. Johnson Kidd, for more than
forty years a resident of Listowel,
died at his home on Inkerman
street on Tuesday night last. He
had been unwell for a couple of
months past but in spite of the
burden of fourscore years his
strong constitution and remark-
able vitality kept him up and he
retained consciousness and all his
faculties until within an hour of
the end.
The deceased, Johnson Champ-
ler Kidd, was a native of York-
shire, England, and came to Can-
ada with his parents when he was
three years of age. The family
came first to Little York (Toronto)
and shortly afterwards took up
farming in East Gwillimbury, York
County. Mr. Kiss was the
youngest of a family of three sons
and six daughters and was him-
seld the last to survive. When he
was twenty years of age in Nov-
ember, 1848, he was married in
East Gwillimbury to Maria Winch
and to them was born a family of
ten children, of whom four are
now living, Mr. William C. Kidd,
Listowel, Mr. Samuel Kidd, Listo-
wel, Mrs. T. J. Evans Victoria, B.
C., and Mr. G. T. Kidd, Strome,
Alberta,
Mr. Kidd came to western Ont-
ario shortly after his marriage and
for some years sold stoves through
the district for John Watson of
Ayr. For a number of years he
was baliff at Glenallen and his
wife died there in April 1865. He
lived in Linwood for a year or
two and came to Listowel in 1868,
having been married a second time
shortly before to Catharine O'Don-
nell who survives him. Except
for a short interval they have
resided in town ever since.
Throughout his long life Mr.
Kidd enjoyed good health, never
having at any time suffered from
any serious illness. Though a
man of pronounced opinions he
was of a most genial and kindly
temperament. The funeral took
place on Thursday afternoon to
Fairview Cemetery.
