3 In Family

FIVE MORE death yesterday
sent Arizona's 1961 traffic toll to
437. The toll now stands at 30
more than on the same date a
year ago.
Biggest single tragedy came
when a Casa Grande mother and
her two sons were killed in a
head-on crash of a car and a
semi-trailer truck 12 miles north
of Casa Grande on Arizona 93
about 7 p.m.
The dead were Maxine Louise
Mitchell, 37, and her sons, Larry,
13, and James, 15.
According to Highway Patrol-
man Robert Arthur, the car driven
by Mrs. Mitchell was headed east
when it crossed the center line
and smashed into the oncoming
truck.
Driver of the truck, William
Marion Morris, 40, and a passen-
ger, Leon Carter, 24, both of
Sherman, Tex., escaped injuries.
Kenneth E. Newton, 21, of Flag-
staff, was fatally injured when
his auto left U.S. 89 six miles
north of Flagstaff and smashed
into an abutment.
Highway Patrolman Jim Wil-
liams said the victim, traveling
alone, apparently dozed at the
wheel.
Francisco A. Ramirez 27, a
Mexican national, was killed 13
miles west of Phoenix on U.S.
60-70 when hit by a car. High-
way Patrolman Ken Forgia said
Ramirez was standing in the
middle of the road when hit by
Aubry Horn, 24, of Los Angeles.
Ralph Montoya Chavez, 32, and
Paul Dowling Fiddell, 35, both of
Snowflake, were killed in a one-
car crash Saturday evening 15
miles south of Holbrook on
Arizona 77.

Woman, 2 Sons
Killed in Crash

TOLEDO, ILL. - Mrs. Maxine
Scranton Mitchell, 37, Casa
Grande, Ariz., formerly of Toledo,
and her two sons, Jimmy, 15, and
Larry, 13, were killed in an auto-
mobile accident near Casa Grande
about 7 p.m. Sunday.
The three were returning to their
home from Phoenix, Ariz., where
they had been visiting their hus-
band and father, Oliver Mitchell,
a patient in a veterans hospital
there.
Funeral arrangements are in-
complete. The bodies will be
brought to the Markwell-Lashmes
funeral home here.
The Mitchells moved to Arizona
about six years ago from Toledo.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Mitch-
ell leaves her mother, Mrs. Leon-
ard Oakley, Toledo; father Scott
Scranton, Pittsfield; paternal
grandmother, Mrs. Anna Scranton,
who resides in Missouri, and a
half-brother, Max Oakley, Toledo.

Casa Grande Woman, Two Sons Killed
Sunday Night In Car-Truck Collision

THREE members of a Casa
Grande family were killed in-
stantly Sunday night in a car-
truck collision 12 miles north
of Casa Grande on State High-
way 93.
The victims were Mrs. Oliver
Mitchell, 37, and her sons,
James Lee, 15, and Larry Gene,
13, all of 19 E. Ash St.
According to the Highway
Patrol, the Mitchell auto was
headed east when it apparently
veered across the center line
and collided head-on with a
trailer truck driven by William
M. Morris of Sherman, Tex. The
auto was knocked from the
highway; the truck came to a
halt in a small ravine off the
road. Morris was not injured.
Mrs. Mitchell and her sons
had been in Phoenix visiting
Mr. Mitchell who is hospital-
ized there. The husband is em-
ployed as a janitor at South
School.
Mrs. Mitchell worked part
time as a waitress at The Won-
der Bar and the El Continental
restaurant.
JAMES LEE was a freshman
at CGUHS, Larry Gene was in
the 8th grade at North School.
The bodies of Mrs. Mitchell
and her sons were shipped to
Toledo, Ill. Tuesday for serv-
ices and burial.
Maxine Louise Mitchell was
born Jan. 1, 1924 in Illinois. She
and her husband, Oliver, who
survives her, moved to Casa
Grande some 8 years ago.
Survivors in addition to her
husband, include her mother,
Mrs. Leonard Oakley; her
brother Max L. Oakley; both
of Toledo, Ill; and her sister,
Mrs. Susan Brehm of Rantoul,
Ill.
James Lee Mitchell was born
Aug. 10, 1946 in Mattoon, Ill.
His brother Larry Gene was
born Sept. 22, 1948 also in Illi-
nois.
MRS. HELEN Saul of Los
Angeles, Calif., the boys' aunt
was in Casa Grande this week
to handle funeral arrangements.
