Arnold DeJong Jr. Dies In
Plunge Into Lake Springfield

Arnold G. DeJong, Jr., 41, of
1960 S. 18th St., died shortly after
5 p.m. Saturday when he leaped
off the bridge over Spaulding
Dam into the icy waters of Lake
Springfield.
Police said DeJong was walking
with Ethel Thompson, 1338½ N.
8th St., when he vaulted over a
railing and into the lake near the
east end of the dam.
Coroner W. C. Telford said tes-
timony by Miss Thompson indi-
cated DeJong committed suicide.
It was not immediately deter-
mined whether he drowned or
died of shock when he hit the
cold lake water.
Miss Thompson told Telford she
was walking with DeJong when
he suddenly kissed her, turned
and made the plunge which police
estimated was a height of 20 feet
from the walk to the water.
She said she attempted for
about "30 minutes" to flag down
passing motorists to get assist-
ance. Lee Price of R. R. 2, Ro-
chester, finally came to her aid.
Price notified Lake Police who
launched a small boat with the
assistance of state and county po-
lice. The body was recovered at
5:35 p.m. floating some 50 to 75
feet from the shore. Assisting in
the recovery were State Trooper
Henry Brangenhorn and Lake Po-
lice William Johnson and James
R. Summers.
DeJong reportedly had been in
ill health and had been dismissed
from a hospital last Sunday. Miss
Thompson said he had been ad-
vised by his physician to take
long walks. She said she often
accompanied him.
The body was taken to the
Staab Funeral Home. Telford will
conduct an inquest.

"Asphyxiation by drowning
with suicidal intent" was found
by a coroner's jury Wednesday
as cause of death for Arnold
DeJong Jr., 41, whose body was
pulled from the icy waters of
Lake Springfield Saturday.
DeJong, who had resided at
1960 S. 18th St., was walking
with a woman companion on
Spaulding Dam when he suddenly
kissed her and vaulted over the
railing. He had recently been
released from the hospital and
was reported to have been
despondent.
Following an inquest, jurors
found "carbon monoxide poison-
ing, accidentally received" as
cause of death for Ernest Paul
Davis, 35, of 1900 Pickett Ave.,
who was found unconscious Dec.
5 on the floor of a garage in his
service station.
Davis was found by a friend,
Clarence Vice, 1919 E. Edwards
St., at Davis's station at 2038 E.
Cook St., who summoned an am-
bulance. Davis was pronounced
dead at 4 p.m. the same day at
St. John's Hospital.
Coroner W. C. Telford con-
ducted inquests into both deaths.
