HENRY HALLOWELL, 93
Henry Richardson Hallowell, 93, a Philadelphia businessman, civic leader and world traveler, died Thursday at Cathedral Village in Andorra, where he and his wife, Dorothy, had lived for 12 years.
A native of Philadelphia, Mr. Hallowell graduated with honors from William Penn Charter School in 1915 after serving as captain of its undefeated 1914 football team. He graduated from Yale University in 1919 and weeks later married Dorothy Saylor of Pottstown.
Mr. Hallowell co-founded the investment firm of Hallowell, Sulzberger, Jenks & Co. in 1945, after working for other firms. Although the business was sold in 1973, Mr. Hallowell continued to work part-time for several clients until about eight years ago, said his son-in-law, Omar Bailey.
Residents of Merion for many years, the Hallowells often left their home, ''Berberrie," on expeditions that by the mid-1960s had taken them to a witch doctor's home in the Upper Amazon, to Outer Mongolia, Siberia, Iran, India, Tahiti and Tasmania, and several times each to Japan and Africa.
In a 1967 article in The Inquirer, he and his wife described their recent excursion to Brazil, Colombia and Peru, where they crossed a stream on the limb of a downed tree - Mr. Hallowell balancing a 20-pound movie camera - to visit a witch doctor's family. They were the first tourists to occupy a roofless jungle lodge.
"We washed ourselves in a stream and lived among the Yagua Indians - the ones who use the blowguns," Mr. Hallowell said in the article. "We ate local monkey meat, with sauce on it. . . . Dorothy and I were never sick a day."
Accompanied by his wife, who enjoyed languages, Mr. Hallowell sought out offbeat locations, he armed with his movie camera and she with her dictionaries, Bailey said. "They used to have big dinner party affairs and showed their travelogue stuff, which was really quite good."
"I think they wanted to see areas where not a lot of their contemporaries had been, while they were still more pristine than they are now," Bailey said.
Mr. Hallowell's long business career began in 1919 as the New Bedford, Mass., agent for George H. McFadden & Brother, at that time the world's largest cotton merchant. After the death of his own brother in 1925, however, Mr. Hallowell returned to Philadelphia to assist his father, John Wallace Hallowell, with his business interests.
In 1931, he entered the investment banking business with the Philadelphia office of Lee Higginson & Co. Later, he managed the bond department at Eastman Dillon & Co. for eight years before founding his own firm with Charles Sulzberger.
Mr. Hallowell served as a director of U.S. Air Group Inc., for more than 30 years. In the past, he also had been a director of the Pennsylvania Sugar Refining Exchange for 16 years and a governor of the Philadelphia Stock Exchange for more than a decade.
For more than 50 years, Mr. Hallowell served on the boards of directors of the Merion Civic Association and the Merion Community Association, and he was president of the civic association for three years. He co-founded the Botanical Society of Lower Merion Township in 1944 and continued as a director until his death.
Mr. Hallowell was a current director and past president of the Penn Club and past president of the Penn Charter Alumni Society. More recently, he was vice president of the Cathedral Village Residents' Association.
A longtime member of the Philadelphia Country Club, Mr. Hallowell also at the time of his death had the longest membership in the Union League, which he joined in 1923.
Besides his wife, he is survived by daughters, Dorothy Fetterolf and Bertinia Bailey; sons, Henry R. Jr. and J. Wallace 3d; a sister; 13 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
Burial will be private. A memorial service will be scheduled later at Overbrook Presbyterian Church. Contributions may be made in his memory to the William Penn Charter School, Henry R. Hallowell Scholarship Fund, 3000 W. Schoolhouse Lane, Philadelphia 19144.
