BOY, 10, IS DEAD;
AUTOIST BLAMED

Driver of Machine Said to Have
Put On More Speed After
Running Over Small
Victim at Play

Carl Piper, 10-year-old one of Mr.
and Mrs. Henry Piper, residing at 420
West Canedy street, was run down and
fatally wounded at 9:20 p.m. yester-
day while playing in the street in front
of the Hay-Edwards school. The
driver of the care put on more speed
after the car struck the youth, it was
said, and his identity was not learned.
Following the accident the boy was
picked up by a couple of his small
friends with whom he had been playing,
and carried to his home. The wheel of
the machine had passed over the boy's
abdomen and he had been rendered un-
conscious. Three physicians were
called, but their efforts to revive him
were in vain. He died at 10:20 p.m.
Coroner Rhodes was notified of the
accident and will conduct an inquisition
into the circumstances surrounding the
boy's death, at 10 a.m. today. The
police were notified and are making an
effort to locate the driver of the ma-
chine that run down the youth. They
will find their efforts difficult, however,
as there is no tangible clew as to who
the autoist is. None of the witnessed
to the crash saw the number of the
car. Some said it was an Overland
machine while others maintained that
it was a Cadillac.
The arrangements for the funeral
services have not been completed. They
will be announced later.
