*John Mackintosh Ferguson.

John Mackintosh Ferguson was born in Uniontown, Pa., February 15, 1873, one of four children of Edmund Morewood Ferguson, a banker, and Josephine E. (Mackintosh) Ferguson. In college, where he was one of the youngest members of our Class, he was elected to Delta Kappa Epsilon and obtained a second colloquy appointment at Commencement.

After graduation he spent several years in travel in Europe and Asia and in December 1900 was appointed Second Secretary to the United States Legation in Tokio, Japan, sailing for his post on December 31. Every one thought his chances in the diplomatic service very bright as he liked the work and was well trained for it. Upon the death of his father, in 1904, however, he was compelled to resign and return to Pittsburgh in order to take charge of the Ferguson estate, which occupied him from then until his death.

On Tuesday, May 6, 1913, he contracted a cold, pneumonia developed the following day and two days later, Friday, May 9, he died at the family residence, Fifth and Morewood avenues, Pittsburgh. Funeral services were held in the Episcopal Church of the Ascension the following Tuesday and he was buried in Homewood Cemetery.

He was unmarried and lived with his mother, who survived him. A brother, William S. Ferguson, was a member of the Class of '96 S., and died in 1904.
